Acardia Students to Visit Zoology Class

This Friday, students from Arcadia Elementary will travel to Mrs. Lisa Clark's Zoology class at Paul W. Bryant High School for a Geocaching fieldtrip!

Mrs. Clark's Zoology students did arthropod collections earlier in the semester and chose their favorite arthropod from their collection to learn more about. They adapted their research into children's books, which they wrote, illustrated, and published.

Bryant students have hidden their books on their campus and provided the latitude/longitude coordinates and a subtle clue about the locations. Each pair of zoology students will accompany a group of four Arcadia students, armed with Bryant GPSs, on a hunt for the books. When the students find the book, the Bryant students will read the book to the Arcadia students and assemble back in the library for a summary session.

Google Earth will be used to observe satellite imagery of the school campus, coupled with latitude/longitude readings. Arcadia students will be aided by their Bryant counterparts in tagging the location of their cache (found book) with the virtual push pin feature. The 11 locations will be collectively observed and students will be able to make inferences about which book had the eastern, southern most locations; which was closest to the equator; etc. The groups of students will also eat lunch together and have lots of fun geocaching!

UA Professor Visits PWBHS Zoology Classes

Dr. Stephen Secor, University of Alabama associate professor, visited Mrs. Lisa M. Clark's and Mrs. Richjetta Smith's Zoology classes on Monday, November 19th. He and his graduate student brought several amphibians and reptiles with them! Students were amazed by seeing the Gila Monster, the subject of some of Dr. Secor's research, up close and personal. Other students couldn't wait to get the gigantic python around their neck for a souvenir photo! Students were able to see amazing physiological adaptations on these wonderful and docile animals, including the marine toad's ability to secrete and "project" toxins from glands on its head--no toad licking, please!  Mrs. Smith's awesome classroom served as a great backdrop for sharing the experience in photos. Click on the Photostory to view highlights from this amazing day!! Thank you, Dr. Secor for a memorable experience!!!!!!!

Teachers are also working on a new collaboration that would fund a rising senior the opportunity to work in Dr. Secor’s lab during part of the summer. Check with Mrs. Clark for details!!

CSI:  Bryant

November is crime investigation month at Bryant. We have set up a crime scene in the courtyard as a re-creation of a murderous event that occurred in 1847 during Westward migration. It is a piece of history from the Donner Party, a group of wealthy Americans trying to take a short cut to California and end up stuck in the snow. Some resorted to cannibalism for survival. There were two Indians that were murdered during the incident. We are re-creating their murder and using a multi-disciplinary approach to "solving the crime."

Please join us in celebrating the depth, fun, and strategic sharing of ideas and information in education. This project involves at least 300 of our students. They will use GPS systems to hide, find, and report evidence through geocaching. They will also using another emerging technology, the Wiki, to share their information. http://csipwbhs.wikispaces.com/

You may take your class to view the crime scene, but don't cross the crime scene tape. Our students will be involved in photographing evidence at the crime scene, so you will be able to see everything up close once all of the photographs are posted to the Wiki. We plan to reveal the murderous suspect at the end of November to allow sufficient time for complete evidence collection, analyses, and reporting.

Five Students Named AP Scholars

Five students at Paul W. Bryant High School have earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program® (AP®) Exams.

The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program offers students the opportunity to take challenging college-level courses while still in high school, and to receive college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP Exams. About 18 percent of the more than 1.4 million high school students in 16,000 secondary schools worldwide who took AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high level to merit the recognition of AP Scholar. Students took AP Exams in May 2007 after completing challenging college-level courses at their high schools. The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on students’ performance on AP Exams.

Two students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. These students are Richard Cockrum and Rebecca Midkiff.  Three students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP Exams, with grades of 3 or higher. The AP Scholars are  Mallory Meissner, Tyler Mills and Tia Williams.

Most of the nation’s colleges and universities award credit, advanced placement, or both based on successful performance on the AP Exams. More than 1,400 institutions award a full year’s credit (sophomore standing) to students presenting a sufficient number of qualifying grades. In 2007, thirty-seven AP Exams were offered in a wide variety of subject areas, each consisting of multiple-choice and free-response (essay or problem-solving or oral response) questions (except for the Studio Art exam which evaluates students’ original artwork).

Snakes in the School

Well, just one – and it was dead.  Mrs. Clark's science classes had the privilege of studying a 4 foot, 2 inch rattlesnake that was killed just off of Rice Mine Road. Students were able to observe the snake's hollow, syringe-like fangs, venom sacs, heat sensing pits, and elliptical-shaped pupils (indicates poisonous snake) on the head. The enormous snake would not fit in any specimen jar that Mrs. Clark had for preservation, so the zoology class dissected him. They were able to identify his retractable reproductive organs and organs of the other major body systems including reptiles' 3-chambered heart. The snake still slithered, even with his head cut off, for a full 12 hours after his death. Simple stimuli, like touch, need not always travel to the (unattached) brain, but can be processed by the spinal cord. The remaining cells maintain lower functioning until all stored ATP (energy) is depleted.

Bryant High School held its graduation ceremony on May 23, 2007 and announced the Honor Graduates.  They are:  A’Lester Cordell Allen, Jessica Kelly Godwin, Meredith Susanne Harris, Rebecca Chandra Midkiff, Tyler Blair Mills, Laura Helen Page, Melissa De Campos Payne, Lindsay Leigh Starks, and Taylor Nicole Williams.

Student Advisory Period

This spring, Paul W. Bryant High School will begin an exciting program to provide our students a chance to work with teacher on an advisory basis.  Our Advisory Program will start with partial implementation in February 2007 with the goal of providing students an opportunity for a successful learning experience by pairing them with academic advisors.  Teachers, counselors and administrators will team with small groups of student to nurture them and provide them with consistent encouragement toward reading their academic goals, scheduling courses to compliment their goals, and strengthening their self-concepts.  Advisors will meet with students during schedules times this semester to pilot the schedule and to determine if any modifications need to be made prior to full implementation in the Fall of 2007.

The student advisory is designed so each certified staff member is assigned 15-18 students.  Students will remain with the same advisor during their time at Paul W. Bryant.  The advisory will serve as an early intervention for students who need extra assistance in academics or social issues.  It also provides time for advising and encouraging student involvement in school clubs.

A pilot run will occur during registration week (February 20-23), utilizing the advisory period to issue registration materials, explain the course catalogue, and help students make course selections that will best meet their academic goals.  Look for registration cards coming home February 20, so you can discuss academic options for the 2007-2008 school year.  Faculty members will be available during the week to continue to advise the students and provide signatures for their registration cards.  We will meet again in our advisory period February 23, 2007, to collect registration cards.  Ultimately, the advisory program will run for the entire year, with advisors and students meeting several times each semester.

We have high hopes that this program will be a great benefit to our students and will continue our goal of preparing them to attain their goals.

AP SCHOLAR AWARDS

Three students at Paul W. Bryant High School have earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program (AP) Exams.

The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program offers students the opportunity to take challenging college-level courses while still in high school, and to receive college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP Exams. About 18 percent or more than 1.3 million high school students in 16,000 secondary schools worldwide who took AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high level to merit the recognition of AP Scholar.

Students took AP Exams in May 2006 after completing challenging college-level courses at their high schools.  The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on student’s performance on AP exams.

At Paul W. Bryant High School, Brian Flowers qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.  Richard Cockrum and George Thagard qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP Exams with grades of 3 or higher.

Dr. Guy Caldwell to Speak to Science Class

Dr. Guy Caldwell will speak to Lisa Clark's class about his research and career on Wednesday, October 5.  Clark’s students will have the opportunity to compete in an essay competition to win slots to be "Scientists-For-a-Day." Caldwell, along with other researchers at UA, will each allow one of our students to work with them all day, go to lunch, and receive certificates of merit in the spring.

The University of Alabama is proud to be home to the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching/Council for Advancement and Support of Education 2005 Alabama Professor of the Year, Dr. Guy Caldwell. A place nicknamed "The Worm Shack" seems an unlikely venue to find the honoree, but that´s where you can often locate Caldwell. So dubbed by students in reference to the tens of thousands of microscopic worms which occupy Caldwell´s laboratory, "The Worm Shack" has drawn funding from some of the world´s most recognizable research organizations. But research is only half the professorial equation. It´s teaching, Caldwell says, that gives him his greatest joy.  Dr. Guy Caldwell, assistant professor of biological sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences, led a UA effort that discovered the function of a protein that can suppress the potentially harmful clumping of other proteins. The discovery has implications in dystonia, Parkinson's disease and other neurological disorders. Caldwell, his wife, Dr. Kim Caldwell, an adjunct assistant professor of biological sciences at UA, and The University of Alabama have a patent pending on the finding. "We're actually patenting something that you and I have in our DNA, but we're patenting it for a therapeutic purpose," Guy Caldwell said.

Matherson to Participate in Humanities Seminars

Lisa Matherson has been selected to participate in two National Endowment for the Humanities Seminars this summer.  She will travel to Nashville to participate in The Hermitage, Andrew Jackson, and America, 1801-1861 and then to Washington, D. These seminars will enable her to engage in intensive study and discussion of important topics in American history as well as network with other educators from across the country.  These academies provide to the participant direct experiences in the interpretation of significant historical sites and the use of archival and other primary historical evidence. They present the best scholarship on a specific landmark or related cluster of landmarks, enabling participants to gain a sense of the importance of historical places, to make connections between what they learn in the workshop and what they teach, and to develop enhanced teaching materials for their classrooms.

All-State Choral Performance

Paul W. Bryant High Students did a great job in the All-State Choral Performance.

These students auditioned for the All-State choir in October.  Over 3,000 students

across the state auditioned and only around 2,000 made the cut.  Paul W. Bryant High

School had four selected:  BriAna Burrell, Jameel McKanstry, Carla Polion and Corneilius

Thomas.  This past weekend was when all of the students selected came together and

performed the pieces they auditioned on last fall. There were five choirs in the festival.

Paul W. Bryant High School students participated in the High School SATB Choir. They

worked with renowned conductor Dr. Peter Bagley from the University of Connecticut.  The

concert was awesome.  The Paul W. Bryant High School Choir is under the direction of

Mrs. Janie Wallace.
